WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai Players 2018

It’s a testament to the immense depth of the current WTA that the secondary season-ending championships boasts the star-power of a former World No. 1 and two-time major champion, the defending champion and a whole host of other former top 10 players and rising stars of women’s tennis.

Garbine Muguruza is arguably the biggest name in the draw, with the Spaniard - who won the French Open and Wimbledon over the last two years, along with reaching World No. 1 last season - hoping to finish what has been a disappointing 2018 campaign on a positive note.

However, she will have to operate at the peak of her powers if she wants to come away with the silverware. Defending champion Julia Goerges was in career-best form at this stage last year as she won Moscow and Zhuhai and carried that form and confidence over to 2018 when she claimed her third title on the bounce in Auckland to break into the top 10 for the first time - can the German go back-to-back in Zhuhai?

This year’s Moscow champion Daria Kasatkina has got to be considered as one of the favourites, with the Russian also reaching the Premier Mandatory Indian Wells final earlier this season as she looks to consolidate her new-found status as a top 10 player, while fellow rising star Aryna Sabalenka has been one of the breakout stories of 2018 - can the explosive 20-year-old end her incredible year and add more silverware to titles already won in New Haven and Wuhan?

Ashleigh Barty, Elise Mertens and Anett Kontaveit can also be included in the ever-growing crop of young WTA stars who can be challenging for major titles over the next decade - perhaps it’s time for one of them to step up and make an impact in Zhuhai? Caroline Garcia, Madison Keys and Anastasija Sevastova are more established stars who will be looking to end 2018 with a bang, while Chinese wildcards Wang Qiang and Zhang Shuai will each be out to back up their impressive Asian swings and delight home fans.

About WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai

The WTA unveiled the Elite Trophy Zhuhai tournament in January 2015 as a brand new singles and doubles event set to take place following all of the action at the WTA Finals each year. The WTA Elite trophy provides an alternative for those top ranked players that just miss out on qualification into the Singapore championships.

Staged at the custom designed Zhuhai Hengqin International Tennis Centre, the WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai marks the 13th tournament to be played in Asia, as tennis continues to grow substantially in the region. The Tour Championships event offers a total prize money of $2,349,363, with the winner to also take away 700 rankings points.

Similar to the WTA Finals, players will compete in round robin format - however there are four groups of three, with the winner of each group advancing through to the semi-finals. Venus Williams won the first edition in 2015, while Petra Kvitova defeated Elina Svitolina to claim the 2016 title. Julia Goerges is the defending champion after the German backed up her Moscow triumph from a few weeks earlier to beat CoCo Vandeweghe 7-5 6-1 in the final.
