The inaugural Bronx Open features some of the world’s leading WTA stars as players get one last hit-out before turning their attention to the final Grand Slam of the year at the U.S. Open across town the following week.

Chinese No. 1 Qiang Wang is the top seed as she looks to win her first WTA title outside of her home country, while compatriot Zhang Shuai is the third seed.

Wimbledon semi-finalist Barbora Strycova, Katerina Siniakova, Yulia Putintseva, Ajla Tomljanovic, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Karolina Muchova round out the seeded players, while the likes of Camila Giorgi, Alize Cornet, Mihaela Buzarnescu and Andrea Petkovic are among the experienced unseeded players who are more than capable of putting together a successful run to the title.

The 2019 Bronx Open is live from the Bronx, New York City, between August 18-24.

About WTA Bronx

The Bronx Open has replaced the Quebec Open on the calendar and has slotted into the spot previously occupied by the Connecticut Open in New Haven, which was a Premier-level tournament. New Haven has been replaced by the Zhengzhou Open, which is scheduled for September, while the new Bronx Open is classified as a WTA International tournament.

Held at the Cary Leeds Centre in Crotona Park in the Bronx, New York City, the Bronx Open offers players one last opportunity to finalise their U.S. Open preparations, with the final Grand Slam of the season beginning at Flushing Meadows the following week.

The Bronx Open is the only WTA tournament held during the week prior to the U.S. Open and features a 30-player singles main draw, along with a 48-player singles qualifying draw and 16-team doubles draw.

A total of $250,000 is up for grabs in prize money, with the winner also taking home 280 ranking points.

WTA CEO and Chairman Steve Simon said: “We look forward to bringing the WTA Tour to the Bronx this season, providing our world class athletes the opportunity to compete at the new state of the art Cary Leeds Center.”
