The US Open series begins in July with the arrival of the WTA Stanford Open. The tournament marks the transition of the WTA from grass to hard courts, as the build-up to the American slam begins.

The WTA Stanford Open, also known as the Bank of the West Classic, is a significant event in its own right. Having been initially run in San Francisco in 1971, the competition is the longest-running women’s only tennis event in the world. It moved to Oakland in 1979, before heading to its current location at Stanford University’s Taube Family Tennis Center in 1997.

This tournament has attracted big names since its inaugural year, and boasts a past-winners list including Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Chris Evert, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Monica Seles, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Martina Navratilova holds the record for most titles won here, with five. She’s followed by Kim Clijsters, with four.
