Always a star-studded event played on hard courts in July, the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic marks the start of the summer hard-court season in the USA with many top names headed to San Jose to begin their preparations for the US Open. 

The US Open series begins in July with the arrival of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. The tournament marks the transition of the WTA from grass to hard courts, as the build-up to the American slam begins. 

Formerly known as the Bank of the West Classic and played in Stanford up until 2018, the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic is a significant event in its own right. Having been initially run in San Francisco in 1971, the competition is the longest-running women’s only tennis event in the world. This tournament has attracted big names since its inaugural year, and boasts a past-winners list including Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Chris Evert, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Monica Seles, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Martina Navratilova holds the record for most titles won here, with five. She’s followed by Kim Clijsters, with four.

In recent years, Victoria Azarenka, Dominika Cibulkova, Angelique Kerber, Johanna Konta and Madison Keys have all triumphed at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. Serena Williams leads active players in titles won, having lifted the trophy in 2011-12 and 2014.
