The WTA tour will make its way over to the Foro Italico in Rome in May for the annual WTA Rome Open. The tournament, currently a Premier level event, is one of the most important clay court competitions to be played each year. Its status and history are undeniable, especially given the star-studded list of players who have lifted the trophy here.

Chris Evert has won the most honours here to date, winning the tournament on five occasions. Gabriela Sabatini and Conchita Martinez, who are four-time winners, are also worthy of mention. Backing these players up on the past champions list are household names such as Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters.

The Foro Italico has hosted this event since 1935, though a different location was used on three occasions since then. The recently built 10,400 seater centre court here is the most notable feature in the tennis complex, and should provide the perfect setting for epic clashes from both the WTA and ATP tours for years to come.
