The post-Wimbledon clay court action continues in Europe in July with the WTA Moscow River Cup.

Formerly the Swedish Open in Bastad, the International-level event relocated to Moscow in 2018, joining other Russian WTA events the Kremlin Cup and the St Petersburg Ladies Open.

Played on clay courts at the National Tennis Centre in Moscow, the Moscow River Cup offers a total financial commitment of $750,000 as well as ranking points and is a favourite with local players as well as all of those who enjoy playing on clay and are looking for one last outing on the surface in the late summer before the WTA Tour turns its attention to the hard courts of the USA.

During the time it was held in Sweden, the tournament's most famous champion was Serena Williams in 2013, with Aravane Rezai, Johanna Larsson and Katerina Siniakova among other champions. Caroline Wozniacki was a two-time runner-up.

The final of the 2018 Moscow River Cup was notable as the first to feature two players born in the 2000s, with 2001-born Anastasia Potapova taking on Olga Danilovic, born the same year. Both were 17 at the time.
