Between 1978 and 2012, Dusseldorf was the venue for the World Team Cup.  Traditionally held the week before the French Open it was regarded as the second most important team competition in men’s tennis after the Davis Cup. During its heyday it was the leading sporting event in the German city of Dusseldorf, attracting 75,000 spectators with the action being beamed to 160 countries around the world.

However as the years went by, the importance of the World Team Cup gradually diminished and when a competition struggles to draw the household names, the sponsors depart too and by 2010 the event was facing financial oblivion.

A concerted publicity effort saw the tournament saved but changes needed to be made and it’s now been transformed into a regular ATP 250 tournament. While it’s nigh on impossible for the Dusseldorf organisers to lure the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer, there’s quite a demand for competitive action the week before a Grand Slam with some players preferring to keep competing rather than spend the week on the practise courts as they feel it will help them be at their sharpest.
