Just over a week after the conclusion of the Australian Open, the ATP World Tour heads to San Jose in California for the SAP Open, also known as the ATP San Jose Open. The ATP San Jose Open is the second-oldest active tennis tournament in the USA, and has a prestigious history. The tournament is currently classified as an ATP World Tour 250 Series competition.

The San Jose Open is the first North American tournament of the ATP World Tour season. The event is open to participants of all levels, though rank outsiders will need to progress through pre-qualifying and qualifying to earn a berth in the main draw. Matches are played on an indoor hard court, which tends to generate no shortage of fast paced end-to-end action.

The SAP Open emerged in 1989 as the Pacific Coast Championships. It took place in Monterey, California. Over the years, the SAP Open had several different homes, such as the Berkeley Tennis Club in Berkeley, and the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The Open now resides in the HP Pavilion in San Jose. The event has been a regular fixture here since 1994.

John McEnroe’s achievements in the SAP Open are often talked about. The American legend has 12 titles to his name in this competition. Five of these were won in the singles draw. McEnroe is just one of many tennis greats to have won the singles draw of this event. Other famous winners include, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, Roy Emerson, Jimmy Connors, Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Don Budge and Fred Perry.

Between the years of 1922 and 1972, a women’s singles and doubles draw was integrated as part of the SAP Open. A mixed doubles competition also existed between 1930 and 1967. The women’s draw also attracted some memorable participants, such as Margaret Court, Darlene Hard and Helen Wills Moody, who all won three singles titles or more.

The ATP San Jose Open is always guaranteed to be a fascinating tournament. Plenty of big name players flock here annually, offering the crowds a real spectacle. The prize pot of over 500,000 US dollars is enough to grab the attention of most participants, though the primary motivation of many entrants here is simply to enter the ranks of the tennis hall-of-famers who have taken part in this very event.
