The ATP Memphis Open takes place in the middle of February, and is amongst the biggest competitions of the month. The Tennessee based event is classified as part of the ATP World Tour 500 Series, and as a result of this is one of the most significant indoor tournaments of the season. The competition is staged on the hard courts of the Racquet Club of Memphis, which features a 5,000 seat stadium.

Memphis is not just a location for professional tennis. It also contains plenty of places of interest and attractions. The city was central to a number of major historical developments in the twentieth century, and visitors to Memphis are often drawn towards the National Civil Rights Museum or Graceland, the former home of the late Elvis Presley.

The ATP Memphis Open, known also as the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, was originally based in Salisbury, Maryland. It was located there between 1971 and 1975. In 1976 the event moved to Memphis, where it currently still resides. A prize pot worth in excess of 750,000 US dollars is on offer for participants here.

Jimmy Connors enjoyed remarkable success at the ATP Memphis Open, winning the men’s singles competition on seven occasions between 1973 and 1984. He was also a two-time runner-up. He’s not the only tennis legend to win this tournament. He’s joined by Stan Smith, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, Andre Agassi, Michael Stich, Ivan Lendl, Jim Courier, Todd Martin, Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, and Andy Roddick on the winners list.

The doubles competition has also hosted some noteworthy partnerships. Connors won two doubles titles after partnering Frew McMillan in 1974 and Ilie Nastase in 1975. McEnroe teamed up with Brian Gottfried for success in 1980. As well as these teams, the Bryan brothers and the Aussie pairing of Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde have managed to top the pack in the men’s doubles.

Memphis also hosts a women’s singles and doubles event, which has been run on a yearly basis since 1986. This has attracted a number of WTA stars, including title winners Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, Monica Seles, Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva and Victoria Azarenka.

The ATP Memphis Open is a key event for indoor hard court specialists. The courts here are quick, and recently this has suited big servers such as Roddick, Sam Querrey and Milos Raonic. A strong all-round game is necessary though, and the fans here won’t be viewing one-dimensional big serve tennis.
