The ATP World Tour heads to Serbia at the end of April for the recently founded ATP Serbia Open. The event has only been in existence since 2009, but has quickly established itself as an exciting and popular event. Also known as the Serbia Open, the ATP Belgrade Open is a clay court ATP World Tour 250 Series event, which carries prize money of over 370,000 Euros.

The tournament is hosted by Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic. His uncle Goran Djokovic currently works as the Tournament Director. One of the main intentions of the ATP Belgrade Open is to promote tennis in Belgrade and to provide the city and nation with its first top tier annual tennis event.

Belgrade isn’t internationally renowned for being an idyllic tourist destination, though the city is actually very tourist friendly. Belgrade is the home to a number of significant and historic buildings and statues, and remains the cultural and economic hub of Serbia. Much of its architecture is of a grey hue, yet the buildings and structures are very striking and characterful.

The ATP Belgrade Open doesn’t have much of a history to speak of but the future is promising for the fledgling tournament. “This tournament has only been around for two years but it’s run flawlessly,” remarked 2010 champion Sam Querrey. “It’s a great event, the venue’s great, the fans are into it. Honestly, it’s one of the best tournaments all year.” With endorsements like that, the popularity of the ATP Belgrade Open will continue to grow at a rapid pace.

Querrey is joined by Novak Djokovic, who has won this event twice, on the winners list. Runner-ups include Lukasz Kubot, John Isner and Feliciano Lopez. Kubot clinched a doubles title here alongside Oliver Marach. The pairing are joined by Santiago Gonzalez and Travis Rettenmaier, and Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek as former doubles winners.

The ATP Belgrade Open has quickly established itself as a respected ATP World Tour event, and the early signs are very promising for this event as a regular fixture on the Tour schedule. The current crop of Serbian tennis players have achieved remarkable success, and this tournament should help Serbia to maintain its status as a major player on the Davis Cup scene through promoting tennis to Serbian youngsters.
