Who is playing WTA Washington in 2018?

Two of the world’s top three players will be present at the Citi Open as the WTA Tour officially kicks begins it’s U.S. Open Series in the American capital of Washington D.C..

In what is shaping as one of the best WTA International fields of the season, World No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki and World No. 3 Sloane Stephens will headline the draw as the pair look to get their respective U.S. Open Series’ off to a successful start.

Stephens, who sensationally captured the U.S. Open title last year after starting her Series ranked outside the top 900 in Washington D.C., returns as the third best player in the world, the Miami Open champion and a French Open runner-up - in addition to her U.S. Open triumph - in what has been a whirlwind 12 months for the American.

Wozniacki snapped her Grand Slam title drought in memorable fashion at the Australian Open to begin 2018, but the Dane has been relatively quiet for most of the year - will she bounce back to life on North American hardcourts, which is a stage of the season she traditionally flourishes?

Wozniacki and Stephens aren’t the only draw-cards at the 2018 Citi Open - rising star and Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka will also be one of the leading contenders for the title as the Japanese powerhouse continues to harness her unlimited potential, while another young gun in Belinda Bencic will also be looking for a resurgence after spending the majority of the last two years on the sidelines.

Add in former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, recent Wimbledon quarter-finalist Camila Giorgi and the always-solid Anastasija Sevastova, Barbora Strycova and defending Citi Open champion Elena Makarova and it promises to be a spectacular week of tennis in the American capital!

About WTA Washington

The Citi Open was one of the first open professional tennis tournaments held in the United States. The WTA’s involvement here only began in 2011. Following the success of the tournament held in College Park, the WTA and ATP combined for a joint event in 2012 and it has continued ever since. The Citi Open is one of 32 tournaments in the WTA International Series, and it also forms part of the US Open Series. In fact, along with the Bank of the West Classic held in Stanford in the same week, the Citi Open marks the start of the US Open Series on the WTA Tour.

The Washington Open has also continually been the site of innovation. Blue courts were debuted here, as were instant replay and video boards. It was also the first tournament to start its main draw on a Sunday. Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova won the maiden edition in 2012 and she is also the first and only female player to date to have won multiple titles at the event after she successful defended her title in 2013.

Former world number two, and two-time Grand Slam champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova is the highest-profile winner at the tournament, following her victory over Karumi Nara in the 2014 final.

Sloane Stephens remains the only American winner, while Lauren Davis is the only other home player to contest the final. Former U.S. Open semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova became the third Russian player to win the Citi Open (Nadia Petrova 2011 and Svetlana Kuznetsova 2014) when she beat Julia Goerges in three sets to win the 2017 title.
