WTA Stanford tournament schedule

Who is playing WTA Stanford in 2017?

Another star-studded field will battle for the prestigious Bank of the West Classic title in Stanford in 2017, with four grand slam champions, two former World No. 1s and some of the brightest young talents in world tennis all set to compete for the WTA Premier-level silverware from July 31 to August 6.

Five-time grand slam champion Maria Sharapova makes her second comeback to the WTA Tour in 2017 and will play her first competitive tournament in the USA since returning from her doping ban in April, while 2010 winner Victoria Azarenka will also compete in her first tournament in the United States since giving birth to her first child late last year.

Azarenka actually defeated Sharapova in the 2010 Stanford final, with both players receiving wildcards into this year’s tournament.

Leading the field is recent Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, who lit up the All England Club with a dazzling fortnight of power tennis, culminating with a straight sets win over Venus Williams in the final. The two-time grand slam champion will play in Stanford for the first time since 2014.

Multiple rising stars of tennis will also be looking to take down the big guns in Stanford in 2017, with the likes of Madison Keys, Ana Konjuh, CiCi Bellis, Naomi Osaka and Natalia Vikhlyantseva all dangerous competitors on hardcourts.

And we mustn’t forget Australian Open semi-finalist and Wimbledon quarter-finalist CoCo Vandeweghe, along with experienced Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, both of whom are among the leading contenders for the title.

About WTA Stanford

The WTA Stanford event is the longest running women’s only event on the WTA Calendar. The tournament was launched in 1971 in San Francisco but it moved to Oakland in 1979 and later to its current location in Stanford in 1997. It is the first tournament of the US Open series as the players attune themselves to the North American conditions ahead of the final Grand Slam of the year. It was elevated from an International event to a Premier tournament in 2009, with global sport and talent management company IMG owning and operating the event.

Played at the Taube Family Tennis Centre at Stanford University, the Bank of the West Classic consistently attracts a star-studded field. Former tennis champion Martina Navratilova holds the tournament record with five titles. Other notable former champions at the WTA Stanford event include Lindsay Davenport, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King Margaret Court, Martina Hingis, Arantza Sanchez-Vicario, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams - who will be looking to add more silverware from her 2000 and 2002 triumphs.

Since the tournament was granted Premier status from 2009, a whole host of grand slam champions and World No. 1s have captured the Stanford title. Marion Bartoli defeated Venus Williams in the 2009 final before Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova - who have both received wildcards for the 2017 tournament - battled it out in the 2010 title match, with Azarenka prevailing in straight sets.

Serena Williams would win back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 - her first pieces of Stanford silverware - while she would also triumph again in 2014, defeating Angelique Kerber in the final. Kerber wouldn’t be denied the following year however, conquering Karolina Pliskova to win her first Bank of the West Classic title, while rising British star Johanna Konta secured her first Premier title in 2016 with a three-set victory over Venus Williams.
