The 1992 Summer Olympics boosted Barcelona’s status as a popular location for sporting events, and it was perhaps inevitable that an ITF tennis competition emerged here in 2003. The event was run at the Club Tennis De La Salut until 2007, when the decision was made to upgrade the tournament to WTA status.

With this, the event moved to its current location at Vall d’Hebron, the same facility used in the 1992 Olympics. Also known as the Barcelona Ladies Open, the WTA Barcelona Open has quickly become a significant fixture on the WTA calendar.

This is the first European red clay competition of the season, and marks the beginning of the run up to the French Open.  Whilst home favourites won the title in the first two years of its existence, the Barcelona Ladies Open has actually been dominated by Italian competitors. Tathiana Garbin, Roberta Vinci, Francesca Schiavone and Sara Errani have all won this event.

Errani added her name to the winners list in 2012 with an emphatic victory over Dominika Cibulkova in the final. In what was a terrific week for Italian tennis, Errani also teamed up with Vinci to clinch the doubles title.
