Arguably the match of the day in Washington on Wednesday, the second round clash between Stosur and Wozniacki has rather peculiarly been demoted to the second show court at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Centre. The primary reason for this is that the men’s side of the tournament is classified as 500-level, although you’d think that a match between a grand slam champion and a two-time grand slam runner-up would be able to find a spot on the five-match schedule for the Stadium court.

Nevertheless, the location of the contest won’t devalue its quality. Wozniacki has endured a turbulent season, first suffering from a significant dip in form and then sustaining an injury to her right ankle that forced her off  tour for the entire European clay court season. The Dane’s ranking has dropped to No. 58 as a result, but a successful week here in Washington could propel Wozniacki back into the top 50.

After a resurgent 2014 season which saw Wozniacki reach her second major final at the US Open, the 26-year-old has fallen back into a slump. She finished the 2015 season at her lowest year-end ranking since 2007, while that final appearance at Flushing Meadows remains the only time Wozniacki has advanced beyond the Round of 16 at a grand slam since the 2012 Australian Open. It’s clear to see that Wozniacki is struggling to replicate her 2009-2011 form, which saw her rise to No. 1 in the world, at the biggest events these days. Equipped with a game style that largely relies on movement and retrieval skills, you have to wonder what the Dane can do to return to the game’s elite for a sustained period of time.

Since returning from injury Wozniacki has posted a respectable 4-4 record. She had a tough opener at Wimbledon against Svetlana Kuznetsova, but she cruised into the second round of Washington with a 6-1 6-1 thumping of Hiroko Kuwata and demolished Sam Stosur 6-2 6-1 on the grass of Eastbourne prior to Wimbledon - a result which will provide her with immense confidence heading into Wednesday.

Stosur meanwhile played some of her best tennis in years during the recent European clay court season. The Australian began by reaching the final of Prague and then backed up that result be making the semi-finals at Madrid. Those results laid the foundation for a successful French Open, with Stosur defeating Simona Halep en route to her first grand slam semi-final since 2012 - where she was toppled by eventual champion Garbine Muguruza.

A return to the top 20 was just reward for Stosur’s clay court exploits, however the 32-year-old experienced her traditional grass court struggles immediately after, throttled by Wozniacki in the aforementioned Eastbourne tournament and then crashing out in the second round of Wimbledon to former finalist but the woefully out-of-form Sabine Lisicki.

But similarly to Wozniacki, Stosur has immediately bounced back in her first event of the American hardcourt season, easing past Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3 6-0. Stosur broke the Russian qualifier for a 5-3 lead in the opening set and didn’t look back, reeling off the last seven games to register an emphatic triumph.

Both players come into this clash on the back of easy, confidence boosting victories in their respective openers. Wozniacki holds a 6-4 advantage in their head to head and has won their last two meetings - although three of the Dane’s wins have come on grass, with the pair more evenly matched on hardcourts. A lot of their matches have been tight affairs and this one promises to be a similar story. Stosur has the ability to overpower Wozniacki with her big serve and forehand, but it will come down to whether she can consistently fire and not become frustrated with the amount of balls Wozniacki gets back. I’m going to lean towards Wozniacki prevailing, but this result could really go either way.
