Coming off respective three-setters, Maria Sharapova and Daria Garvrilov will collide in an intriguing third-round matchup on Thursday in Rome.

Maria Sharapova is picking up plenty of momentum--and not a moment too soon.

With the French Open looming large (beginning in less than two weeks), Sharapova won back-to-back matches for the first time since the Australian Open when she earned three victories in Madrid and reached the quarterfinals last week. The world No. 40 has added two more wins at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, beating both Ashleigh Barty and Dominica Cibulkova in three sets.

Up next for Sharapova on Thursday is a third-round showdown against Daria Gavrilova, with the head-to-head series tied at one win apiece. They faced each other twice in 2015, when Gavrilova got the job done 7-6(4), 6-3 in Miami before Sharapova prevailed 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals of this same Rome event.

"It's been a while since we played each other," the Russian noted, "but I kind of know what to expect from her game."

Nobody knew what to expect when Gavrilova and Garbine Muguruza battled late into the night--and the following morning--on Wednesday. Muguruza led by a double-break in their third set only to see Gavrilova eventually save to match points en route to a 5-7, 7-2, 7-6(6) upset of the No. 3 seed. The Australian finally crossed the finish line after three hours and eight minutes.

Sharapova, meanwhile, needed two hours and 30 minutes to outlast Cibulkova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

"I was really happy at the end," the former world No. 1 assured. "I thought there was a lot of good things to take away from it. The competitiveness...and against a player that I thought competed and played really well and played some of her best tennis for a long stretch of time. I don't think she's been producing that type of tennis in the last few months, and to come out today and to play that way...I expect that from a lot of players. And I thought I delivered quite well. So that makes me happy."

"I'd like to just forget that first set. I was just slow and not with it, really; not seeing the ball well, not adjusting, not making any little adjustment steps (and) hitting a lot of errors. I was like, 'Well, that's got to change. And I've just got to be a little bit more aggressive.'

"I played defense quite a while, and I thought my level was extremely high throughout the match.... I was really happy with the way that I finished."

Additional good news is that she finished long before Gavrilova, who will have minimal recovery time before this one takes the stage in Next Gen Arena as the fourth match scheduled for Thursday. It also won't help the 24-year-old that she required two hours and 35 minutes to scrape past qualifier Natalia Vikhlyantseva 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round.

Sharapova should be able to dictate play with big hitting and wear down an opponent who already must be running on fumes.
