After snapping a four-match losing streak at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, world number two, Caroline Wozniacki now seeks a quarter final spot at the Foro Italico when she takes on the crafty Anastasija Sevastova on Thursday.

Wozniacki reached the semi-finals in Rome in 2011, but she had not won a match at the Italian capital since then, falling in the opening round in three successive visits and missing the tournament in the three other years, including 2016 and 2017. Hence, given such a dismal record, and her general dislike for clay, another opening round exit was well on the cards when she stepped up against former Roland Garros quarter finalist, Alison Van Uytvanck. However, the Dane put up a competent performance to take out the Belgian 6-1 6-4. It wasn’t as easy as the score-line suggests, with the world number two requiring an hour and a half to shake off Van Uytvanck.

Wozniacki faced break points in all but one of her service games in the first set, but she saved five of the six break opportunities against her serve, while converting three of the five she carved out. She dropped her serve in the opening game of the second set, but the second seed broke back immediately before striking again in the fifth game to bag the break that ultimately proved decisive. In truth, there wasn’t much to chose between the players, certainly not as much as the score suggests, but Wozniacki was the more clinical, as she always tends to be!

The world number two is seeking her second title of the season, looking to add to her Australian Open triumph. Wozniacki, who had finished last year on such a high by winning the season-ending WTA Finals, brought that momentum into the new season, reaching the final in her first tournament of the season in Auckland, before breaking her Grand Slam drought with a sensational victory at the Australian Open. She hasn’t been quite as good since then, making just the one semi-final (Doha) in her next six tournaments. She would have been particularly disgusted with fourth-round and opening round exits at Indian Wells and Miami.

Wozniacki opened her clay-court season in Istanbul, but she was forced to retire in the third-set of her quarter final meeting with Pauline Parmentier because of an abdominal injury. She returned in time to make the Madrid field, where she was handily beaten by KiKi Bertens in the Round of 32.

Wozniacki is once again in a tussle with Simona Halep for the No. 1 ranking, but she will be the first to warn that it’s one step at a time, particularly if the next step pits you against the very crafty and clay-savvy Anastasija Sevastova.

Sevastova is making just her second appearance in Rome, and she is looking to get into the third round for the first time, having lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second-round last year.

Sevastova has been a steady top-20 player for over a year now, having first broken into that elite group in May last year, following a semi-final at the Madrid Open. A generally profitable period on clay also yielded quarter finals in Charleston, Stuttgart, Bucharest and Bastad, and a decent third-round run at Roland Garros. Sevastova was not all about the clay last season, as she won a grass-court title in Mallorca, made the semi-finals in Dubai earlier in the year, and reached the quarter finals of the US Open. She closed out the season with a semi-final finish at the WTA Elite Trophy.
She had a good start to the 2018 season, as she reached the semi-finals in her season-opener in Brisbane, but she didn’t make a single quarter final in the rest of the hard-court season, her best being Round of 16 runs in Doha and Indian Wells. However, she sprang to life at the first sight of clay, reaching the semi-finals in Charleston, before pulling out of Stuttgart due to gastro-intestinal illness. She returned to the tour in Madrid, where she lost to a red-hot Kiki Bertens in the second round, and here she is in Rome, getting past Kristina Mladenovic (who unfortunately retired from that first-round meeting) and Aleksandra Krunic to set up a Rome date with Wozniacki.

Wozniacki has won all three previous matches quite easily in straight sets (including a 6-0 6-2 drubbing at the 2016 US Open, but all those meetings were on hard courts, and the switch to clay alters the balance of this one significantly. Wozniacki traditionally doesn’t play well on clay, while Sevastova is very much at home on the surface. The good thing for Wozniacki is that Sevastova isn’t one of those players that can hit her off this surface, but the Latvian is a natural on clay, and has got many other tricks that can hurt Wozniacki.
