Ranked 144, Nick Kyrgios pulled off the upset of the tournament with a four set  7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3 display to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

"I think I was in a bit of a zone out there," Kyrgios told BBC television. "It hasn't sunk in what just played out out there. I played extraordinary tennis. I was struggling a bit on return, but I worked my way into it. I served at a really good level and I'm really happy.

"You've got to believe you can win the match from the start and I did. I'm playing unbelievable tennis on the grass. He hit extraordinary shots, but he's always going to bring that."

Nadal looked to have regained some momentum in the second set, but missed a chance to take that vital two set lead but again Kyrgios stepped up to take that advantage. He thrilled the crowd with first a cheeky “tweener” before coolly service the match out to love, finishing on an ace.

Round 3: Beat Mikhail Kukuskin 6-7(4) 6-1 6-1 6-1

After a difficult start, Nadal found his range to power into the Wimbledon fourth round with a 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mikhail Kukushkin as rain caused chaos to the schedule on Saturday.

Playing under the roof, Nadal recovered from the loss of the first set to reach the fourth round for the first time since finishing runner-up in 2011 to Novak Djokovic.

"I've finished all the matches [this week] playing better than when I started; that's very positive,” Nadal told the BBC in his post-match interview. “I'm very happy to be in the second week again after two years of losing in the first and second round. I had good tactics today; I was fighting for every ball and looking for solutions."

Round 2: Beat Lukas Rosol 4-6 7-6(6) 6-4 6-4

Nadal had to fight back from the brink of a two sets deficit to beat his 2012 conqueror Rosol on Thursday for a place in the third round at The Championships.

Nadal saved one set point at 5-6 in the second set tie-break, before coming back to win 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court. Nadal was down 3-5 deficit in the second set tie-break and struck a forehand winner down the line, when serving, at 5-6. Rosol hit a double fault at 6-7 to end a 57-minute set.

"Every match is so difficult here. Especially when you play against players that really decide to play every shot [at] full power. I played a bad game in the 4-4 and I lost the first set. I think until that moment I was playing better than him, but didn't have my chances on the return because he was serving well. [I am] very happy. It is a very important victory for me… I finished the match playing at a very high level."

Round 1: Beat Martin Klizan 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3

Nadal broke a three match losing streak but not without setting some hearts beating in anxiety after dropping the first set against Klizan, who scored a first round upset at the French Open when he put out Kei Nishikori.

Nadal admitted that his previous results had been on his mind, but once he got into his rhythm, Klizan had no answer, and ultimately Nadal prevailed.

"I am excited to be back here, to win another match at Wimbledon, on the Centre Court," he said.
