Third seed Federer from Switzerland is to play ninth seeded Croat Marin Cilic as he bids to make it into the semi-final. Federer defeated Steve Johnson in straight sets in the fourth round here after having won his matches against Guido Pella, Marcus Willis and Daniel Evans in the first three rounds.

Quite surprisingly, it was against Pella that he struggled the most. Federer has looked at ease in his last three matches at Wimbledon and is yet to drop a set here this year.

Cilic profited from Kei Nishikori’s retirement from their fourth round fixture on Monday. Prior to that, the Croatian had defeated Lukas Lacko in straight sets in the third round. He had also downed Brian Baker in similar fashion in the first round but was made to work for his victory against Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round at The Championships.

Federer has a 5-1 lead in the overall head-to-heads against Cilic. Their last meeting came at the semi-final of the 2014 US Open where Cilic won in straight sets. The two have never played on this surface on a previous occasion and as such, it is the former world number one who goes into the match as the favourite.

Second seed and current tournament favourite Murray will take on French twelfth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his quarterfinal fixture here at Wimbledon. Murray downed talented Australian Nick Kyrgios in straight sets in his fourth round contest here after having achieved similar results against the likes of Liam Broady, Yen-Hsun Lu and John Millman in the first three rounds.

Tsonga did not have to contest his fourth round fixture against his compatriot Richard Gasquet as the latter pulled out with a problem. The twelfth seed had survived a huge scare in the third round when he came back from two sets down to defeat John Isner. Tsonga looked down and out of the contest before somehow managing to win the third set tie-breaker and staging a remarkable turnaround. He had also defeated Inigo Cervantes and Juan Monaco in the first two rounds here.

These two men are no strangers to each other with fifteen meetings in the past. Murray has won a lion’s share of those contests with 12 wins compared to just three victories for the Frenchman. Their last meeting had come at the 2015 Canadian Masters where the Briton had won in straight sets. A similar result could be expected on Wednesday.
