Top seeded Williams comes into the final on the backs of a straightforward 6-2, 6-0 win in straight sets over Elena Vesnina in the semi-final. She had beaten Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets in her quarterfinal clash prior to the semis.

Earlier in the tournament, the American world number one had overcome challenges from Amra Sadikovic, Christina McHale, Annika Beck and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first four rounds.

Fourth seeded German Kerber has been on a fantastic run at The Championships this year. She is yet to drop a set at the tournament. She downed Serena’s elder sister Venus Williams in straight sets in her semi-final clash after defeating Romanian hotshot Simona Halep in a tight quarterfinal match 7-5, 7-6(2).

Kerber had started her tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Laura Robson in the first round and went on to beat Varvara Lepchenko, Carina Witthoeft and Misaki Doi in the second, third and fourth rounds respectively.

While Williams had come into this tournament following her heartache at the French Open, Kerber had been in poor form, exiting the WTA Birmingham at the quarterfinals. The German has surprised everyone with how far she has managed to progress in this ongoing tournament on the backs of poor form.

The two ladies have met seven times in the past with Williams enjoying a vast majority of success. The 21-time Grand Slam winner has a 5-2 head-to-head record against Kerber and she will seek to improve upon it.

Their last meeting came at the final of the Australian Open earlier this year where Kerber went on to stun Williams in straight sets. The latter had also reached the French Open final at Roland Garros but failed to cross the final hurdle against Garbine Muguruza. She will hope for a better outcome on Saturday afternoon.
