Back John Isner to beat Marin Cilic in our tennis bet of the day as the two big servers battle it out for their first win of the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals in London on Wednesday night.

A must-win encounter awaits both Isner and Cilic if they want to reach the knockout stages at the Nitto ATP Finals after each lost their opening match in Group Guga Kuerten.

While Isner is making his debut at the season-ending championships and came up against on-fire World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in his opening match at the O2, Cilic is competing in London for the fourth time now - and he’s only been able to win one match out of 10.

Cilic lost all three of his round robin matches in 2014 and 2017, managing his lone win in 2016 over Kei Nishikori. For whatever reason, the Croatian can’t seem to master the indoor conditions of the O2 at the end of a long season, and after falling in straight sets to Alexander Zverev and still having to play Djokovic, Cilic is staring down the barrel of another winless season-ending tournament.

Cilic does own a 7-3 record over Isner in their head-to-head, but the American has turned things around in their recent encounters, winning three of their last four, including a victory this year in Miami and a win in their only indoor match at the 2016 Paris Masters.

Isner’s matches are always a bit of a lottery with his enormous serve, but when you look at Cilic’s recent defeats, there’s not much cause for optimism if the match does indeed come down to a few points here and there, especially in tiebreaks.

Indeed, Cilic has been in commanding winning positions in his last 10 defeats, as illustrated through this tweet below.

Isner didn’t play poorly against Djokovic - he was just overwhelmed by a super-human returning display from the Serbian. Cilic won’t come close to matching that level on Wednesday, and with the American’s great recent record against the Croatian, I think he starts this match-up as the favourite.
