Sweden's former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson will retire from tennis after struggling to recover from a foot injury aged 34.

Johansson, the last man from Sweden to win a Grand Slam title when he lifted the 2002 Australian Open, told Stockholm media that his playing days are over.

"The foot feels better but in order to make a serious comeback I would have to train harder than I ever have. I'm not prepared to do that". Johansson confessed.

Johansson had an impressive career, winning nine ATP titles and a career-high ranking of seventh in the world.

Johansson is now a father of two after his wife recently gave birth and has said he had wanted to stay in the game long enough for his young children to see him play.
