Hewitt suffered the injury during the doubles rubber of Australia's 3-2 defeat at home to Belgium. Hewitt and Paul Hanley still sealed a comfortable straight sets win to put Australia 2-1 up but without Hewitt for the final day singles rubbers, the tie slipped away from them.

“Lleyton has a strain in the back of his hand close to his wrist - it was painful," said Aussie Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald. "He sustained it late in the second set. The doc says he will need three weeks to get over it."

Hewitt had been planning to compete in Tokyo and Shanghai over the next month but it looks like he will miss most of the indoor season.

Hewitt lives for the slams these days and put in good performances at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon but it is very much apparent that he can no longer challenge the top four over five sets. He had a miserable summer on the US hard courts, going out in the first round at Flushing Meadows.
