It's Davis Cup final weekend, with France hosting Croatia in Lille, and we have selected our best bets of Day 1.

Borna Coric to beat Jeremy Chardy, Davis Cup Final, live from Lille from 2:00pm local time, 1:00pm GMT

Borna Coric may have a losing record against Chardy, but none of their previous three matches came in 2018, when Coric made the big step up into the top 20. A splendid season yielded a first ATP 500 title in Halle, defeating Roger Federer in the final, while he also made a big impact at Masters 1000 level, making the final in Shanghai and the semis at Indian Wells. Chardy was not without his own moments, as he got to the final in s-Hertogenbosch, semis at Queen’s and the fourth round at Indian Wells and Miami.

In previous seasons, Chardy’s serve and forehand would have given him a big advantage over Coric, but the Croatian has significantly improved those aspects of his game. His forehand still isn’t as good as Chardy’s, but it’s a much better shot than it was last season. Coric will also boss Chardy in the backhand exchanges, while his greater mobility should also come in handy in a best-of-five-sets duel on the clay of Lille.

Chardy leads Coric 2-1 on head-to-head (1-1 on clay), but I expect Coric to level that series on Friday and give Croatia the perfect start in this final.

Marin Cilic to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Davis Cup Final, live from Lille from 4:00pm local time, 3:00pm GMT

Unlike the previous match, I expect this one to go with the head-to-head, which Cilic currently leads 5-2. French captain, Yannick Noah made a brave call in nominating Tsonga for Friday’s singles, and it was a call he had to make, I think, but I don’t think his charge will get much joy from Cilic in the second rubber. Having played so little tennis this season, his match fitness/sharpness remains under question, and over the best of five sets against a player as good as Cilic, I think he will be found out. The match-up isn’t exactly favourable. He probably has the better serve and forehand, but there isn’t much at all between the two in those areas. There’s a bigger gap though in the backhands, with Cilic a lot more potent on that wing than Tsonga. I think the Croatians will take a 2-0 lead on Friday, with Coric first, and then Cilic winning the singles rubbers.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran to beat Radu Albot, Pune Challenger, live from Pune from 6:00pm local time/ 12:30pm GMT

I’ve backed Prajnesh Gunneswaran all week, and he’s kept delivering, so why fix what isn’t broken, even if the in-form Indian is up against the Pune top seed on Friday?
Bangalore champion, Gunneswaran has had a dominant week, easing through three rounds without dropping a set, stretching his winning streak to eight matches in the process. Top seeded Albot hasn’t been as smooth, dropping a set in the quarter finals against Sasi Kumar Mukund. The Moldovan defeated Gunneswaran in straight sets on his way to the Liuzhou title just under a month ago, but Gunneswaran has been playing the better tennis since then, and Friday could be the day he gets his revenge.
