With the crowd overwhelmingly in the corner of the World No. 1, the defending champion got down to business, defending solidly and hitting well, rewarded with the first break against a somewhat tentative Nadal, before an uncharacteristically loose game handed Nadal a break back.

Another brace of double-faults on Nadal’s serve gave Djokovic another break, and this time he made no mistake in consolidating, finishing the first set off with an ace, in 44 minutes.

It was another nervy start for the Spaniard in the second set as another slew of errors gave Djokovic another early break. With the crowd willing him on to make a match, Nadal had to dig deep to save two break points.

Nadal started to produce the kinds of shots he had been sending down as winners throughout the tournament as his back was pushed more and more to the wall, warding off a match point on his own serve and another on Djokovic. However another of the errors that had plagued him throughout the match handed the defending champion his fourth title win in a row (following on from Beijing, Shanghai and Paris).

Nadal’s difficulties in serve were perhaps what made the difference in the final, as he spoke after the match:

“I felt that when I was playing, I was not far away off his level.  But he, you know, played with advantage almost all the match because I give him opportunities with my serve.” He continued: “The only thing I can say is congratulate him and I hope to be ready for Australia to play my best again.  Is a little bit more favourable court for me.  I gonna try to prepare myself as good as I can.”

Djokovic acknowledged that the rivalry has brought out the best in these two players:

“We push each other to the limit.  We make each other better players.  We make each other work harder on our games, especially when we play against each other.  It's always a huge challenge. “ He continued: "He has improved his game immensely on the hard court this year.  You're right, he has been positioning himself really well, staying closer to the line and using his forehand around the court really well, as well as serving more efficiently, which was of course giving me and other players trouble to play him."

It is not all over for Djokovic, who will be back in action again at the end of the week, when Serbia face the Czech Republic for the Davis Cup Final.

“We have very tough opponents, defending champions, but the Davis Cup is the only team competition in our sport that brings the best possible energy and willpower in me, and I can speak in the name of my teammates.”
