Juan Martin Del Potro and Stefanos Tsitsipas will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in an especially intriguing second-round contest at the Rome Masters on Wednesday night.

Juan Martin Del Potro's 2018 clay-court campaign has been minimal, to say the least. That of his Wednesday opponent at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia has been anything but.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has been one of the busiest players on tour this spring as he heads into a first-ever head-to-head showdown against Del Potro at the Foro Italico. The 19-year-old Greek reached the Monte-Carlo second round as a qualifier, finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in Barcelona, advanced to the Estoril semifinals, and finally ran out of gas in a first-round Madrid loss to Evgeny Donskoy.

Tsitsipas recently endured a stretch in which he played three consecutive matches that ended in third-set tiebreakers. The world No. 43 was one-upped by Joao Sousa 6-4,1-6, 7-6(4), fell to Donskoy 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(3), and outlasted Mikhail Kukushkin 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(5) in the first round of Rome qualifying. Tsitsipas booked his spot in the main draw with an ensuing 7-6(9), 6-4 defeat of Madrid quarterfinalist Dusan Lajovic before getting a first-set retirement from Borna Coric on Tuesday.

His reward is a meeting with Del Potro, who earned a bye as the No. 5 seed. The Argentine is sixth in the world and boasts a 22-5 record this year, mostly thanks to a scorching-hot March in which he won back-to-back titles in Acapulco and Indian Wells before making a run to the Miami semifinals. This is just Del Potro's second clay-court event of the spring, with the first one resulting in a third-round upset loss to Lajovic--also in a third-set tiebreaker.

Although the one-time French Open semifinalist is no slouch on this surface, he admits that it isn't his favorite.

“I don’t like to run too much,” Del Potro joked during his pre-tournament press conference. “And you must play long rallies here on clay. But if you play aggressive on this surface, also you can be dangerous. You need to be 100 percent physically (and) mentally.

“And I’m just trying to stay healthy in this part of the year, to improve my game and hold my body in the second part of the season.... I’m feeling good. I have good feelings with the ball. (have) I already practiced twice (in Rome) and I’m hitting good. But I need to keep improving my game on clay. It’s not my best part of the season."

This, however, could be the best match of the day for the fans between a top 10 player and an up-and-comer who is one of the hottest guys on tour right now. While Del Potro is a clear favorite on paper, he will have to be wary of a confident, in-form, and battle-tested Tsitsipas.
