Miami Masters 2017 Schedule & Order of Play

Who is playing the Miami Masters in 2017?

After a week and a half of dramatic matches, upsets and comebacks, the 2017 Miami Masters will conclude with a final featuring what is, for many, the dream match-up of modern men's tennis: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the perennial rivals, facing off for the title.

This will be the third time already that Federer and Nadal have faced off in 2017, and so far Federer's newly discovered ability to hit through his long-time nemesis has been the keynote of the 18-time Grand Slam champion's resurgence as the pre-eminent force at the top of the game; it was Nadal he beat in five sets to claim that remarkable eighteenth title at the Australian Open, and it was Nadal he beat again comprehensively in straight sets in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters on his way to that title.

Federer hasn't played in the Miami Masters final for over a decade - his two titles came in 2005-6 - and he has had to work extremely hard to book his place in this one. After surviving what could have been a tough challenge from Juan Martin del Potro in the third round with consummate ease, Federer had to save two match points against Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals and in the semifinals, was pushed all the way by Nick Kyrgios before finally edging the Australian in three tie break sets.

Nadal's progress through the draw, with the exception of a comeback from a bagel first set at the hands of Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round, has been smooth by comparison, ousting Jack Sock in the quarterfinals and Fabio Fognini in the semifinals. The Spanish player has never won the Miami Masters despite a sensational 28 Masters 1000 Series titles overall and claiming the title would be a huge boost as he heads into his preferred clay season, but despite an overall 23-13 head-to-head against Federer, he's lost the last three he's played against the Swiss. Can Nadal turn that around in Sunday's Miami final?

About the Miami Open

The ATP Miami Open presented by Itau (formerly the Sony Open) follows on from two weeks of tennis in California, and boasts the participation of the sport's top men and women in a combined ATP Masters Series and Premier level event.

Tournament founder Butch Buchholz's ambition was for the Miami tennis tournament to become the first Grand Slam at the year. Christened "The Winter Wimbledon", its debut in 1985 came at a time when the Australian Open was held at the end of the year. The first ball was struck at the event in the February of the aforementioned year, with Tim Mayotte and Martina Navratilova the first champions crowned. Each defeated a fellow American - Mayotte beating Scott Davis, and Navratilova taking down Chris Evert.

While the event has never reached major status, it has - for the duration of its life - been in a two-way fight with Indian Wells for the title of the 'Fifth Slam'. The tournament broke its all-time attendance record in 2012, with 326,131 fans turning out to watch the action. Last year, an impressive 300,952 total attendances were recorded - the seventh straight year that attendance would soar above 300,000.

Now housed at the Tennis Centre at Crandon Park, Miami is one of only two non-Slam events that runs over the course of two weeks. It showcases the best players in the world as part of the spring hard-court swing, ahead of the start of the European clay court season, which will ultimately lead up to the second Grand Slam of the year: Roland Garros.
