The WTA Tokyo Open has a relatively lengthy history compared to other Asian Swing events, having been founded in 1984. When it was first played, the tournament took place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on indoor carpet courts. The popularity of the Tokyo Open enabled it to be upgraded to the Premier Tier in 1993.
The event was played on carpet up until 2008, when it relocated to the hardcourts at the Ariake Tennis Forest Park. The venue’s main feature is the 10,000-seater Ariake Coliseum. The relocation helped the tournament to hold on to its status, and was further evidence of the demise of top level carpet court tennis.
Former champions here include Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graf, Gabriela Sabatini, Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova, Dinara Safina and Caroline Wozniacki. Hingis tops the leaderboard having won five titles, the first of which she won as a 16-year-old.
