Kuala Lumpur became the latest addition to the WTA Tour’s list of stops in glamorous international cities in 2010 when it hosted the first Malaysian Open, won by Alisa Kleybanova.
Headlined by Olympic gold medallist Elena Dementieva and Li Na, who would go on to win two Grand Slams, the first edition of the Malaysian Open was a huge success and the tournament quickly picked up a prestigious title sponsor, BMW, who backed the next staging of WTA Kuala Lumpur in 2011.
The Malaysian Open has become a popular stop on the WTA Tour and its only tour-level event in Malaysia, adding a Far East stop to the WTA Tour’s spring hard-court schedule. Following the prestigious Premier events in the Middle East, many of the WTA Tour’s finest choose to travel to Kuala Lumpur to tune up their games further for March’s major events in Indian Wells and Miami.
An International-level tennis tournament offering $250,000 in prize money and played on outdoor hard courts, the Malaysian Open has featured the likes of Marion Bartoli, Jelena Dokic (champion in 2011), Agnieszka Radwanska, Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki.
But established stars aren’t the only thing WTA Kuala Lumpur has to offer. The event has evolved a reputation as anointing the promising young talents of women’s tennis, with Su-Wei Hsieh, Karolina Pliskova and Donna Vekic all capturing their maiden titles at the Malaysian Open.
