Held since 1915, the Swiss Open is situated in the picture postcard town of Gstaad, a spectacular location surrounded by mountains in south-western Switzerland, near the border with France. The tournament is perhaps best known for presenting Roger Federer with a cow on his homecoming just after he won his first Wimbledon title in 2003.
Federer didn’t win the title that time but he returned triumphantly to his hometown the following year, clinching victory with a win over Igor Andreev. However, sadly for tennis fans in Gstaad, that’s been the last they have seen of Federer live. The great Swiss prefers to take the month off after Wimbledon to recuperate ahead of the hard court season.
There have only ever been two Swiss champions in the event’s history although Stanislas Wawrinka came close in 2005. In fact, it has been the Spanish who have ruled supreme in Gstaad, winning 12 of the titles since 1990. Back in the ‘90s, the tournament regularly attracted some of the game’s strongest clay-courters with Spaniards like Alex Corretja, Sergei Bruguera and Albert Costa dominating. Two-time Grand Slam champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov also clinched the title in 1995.
