If journalists could have their way then all tournaments would be held in the truly spectacular settings of the Côte D’Azure. With Monte Carlo and now Nice on the calendar, the ATP Tour makes two very welcome stops to this picturesque corner of southern France during the clay-court season.
In 2010, the Tour returned to Nice for the first time in 15 years as an ATP 250 tournament held on the eve of the French Open, replacing the Kitzbuhel event. The tournament was originally part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit between 1970 and 1989 under various names. From 1990 through to 1995 it was known as the Phillips Open and since its return it has simply been, the Nice Open.
Back in its pomp in the 70s and 80s, the tournament attracted some of the greatest clay-courters in the history of the game, most prominently Bjorn Borg. The great Swede won six French Open titles and he triumphed in Nice in 1977 and 1980. Two-time Grand Slam champion Ilie Nastase won the first two editions of the event.
Other notable winners include Yannick Noah (French Open champion in 1983), the ever popular Henri Leconte and Andres Gomez (French Open champion in 1990). Big name stars such as Ivan Lendl and Jim Courier never managed to win the title.
