The ATP 250 tournament in Los Angeles is the second stop (out of six) on the US Open Series which runs from mid July right through to the US Open at the end of August. But it’s a landmark event in its own right as the longest running professional sporting event in the city, hosting the world’s leading players since 1927. Controversial American Bill Tilden, who won ten Grand Slam titles while dominating amateur tennis throughout the 1920s, won the inaugural title.
The tournament is now held at the Los Angeles Tennis Centre, built to host the 1984 Summer Olympics, only the second time tennis had featured at an Olympics in 60 years.
These days the total prize money pot on offer is $700,000 and with the University of California also helping to bankroll the event, it’s been able to attract players of the calibre of Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Juan Martin Del Potro even in this era of ever-increasing appearance fees.
Roy Emerson, who once held the record for most major titles won, Jimmy Connors and Andre Agassi all jointly hold the tournament record, having won four titles each. The event’s history is filled with illustrious American champions with Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Arthur Ashe and John McEnroe all winning it more than once.
