Held in the heart of Hamburg at the Rothenbaum Tennis Centre, the German Tennis Championships is the first ATP 500 event of the summer and the highlight of the month-long European clay-court swing which follows Wimbledon.
It’s an opportunity for the players who dislike the faster hard courts, to rack up some points before the tour moves exclusively to North America and as such it attracts some of the game’s leading clay-court specialists.
Of course, not long ago this event was one of the elite nine Masters 1000 events and held in a prime location on the calendar, in mid-May. As a result, the centre court is the largest of its kind in Germany, a retractable roof arena which holds 13,200 spectators. However in 2009, it was downgraded to its current status to the dismay of the organizers who unsuccessfully tried to sue to prevent the downgrade, claiming the current slot limits their ability to attract the big names.
Back when it was a Masters 1000 event, Hamburg was a happy hunting ground for Roger Federer. The Swiss won the titles four times and it was one of the few locations on the clay-court where he had the edge over great rival Rafa Nadal who has won it just once. Nadal found himself less at ease on the faster paced clay.
Other multiple champions include Ukraine’s Andrei Medvedev who won three titles (Medvedev made the French Open final in 1999 losing to Andre Agassi) and Ivan Lendl who won two in the 1980s.
