The ATP World Tour added the Claro Open Colombia to the schedule in 2013, providing another hardcourt tournament ahead of the US Open.
ATP World Tour tennis returned to Bogota in 2013 with the introduction of the Claro Open Colombia. An ATP event took place here between 1997-2002, and when a space opened up again on the calendar IMLA de Colombia stepped up and bought the rights.
The Claro Open Colombia is a 250 Series competition, held at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento in Bogota. This is the same venue that the tour used to visit in previous years.
Tennis is growing in popularity in South America and the introduction of a new hardcourt event should inspire a new generation of players. South American top level tennis has historically revolved around red dirt and the Golden Swing, so an increased focus on hardcourts should help to produce more rounded players.
