The Rosmalen grass court championships get underway in mid-June the Dutch town of  ‘s-Hertogenbosch as players look to finalise their Wimbledon preparations away from the hustle and bustle of London. The UK goes tennis crazy for two weeks a year and come this week, the hype will be escalating rapidly.

In contrast, this event (currently known as the UNICEF Open) offers a relative serenity, an atmosphere which has been appreciated by some of the game’s leading stars. Two-time Wimbledon finalist Pat Rafter was a regular vistor to ‘s-Hertogenbosch, winning a hat-trick of titles between 1998 and 2000. Wimbledon champions Michael Stich and Lleyton Hewitt are also among the past winners.

However, like Eastbourne, ‘s-Hertogenbosch has been more low key in recent years due to the game’s top stars beginning to dominate on all surfaces. After a long clay-court season, you’ll rarely see the top ten competing the week before Wimbledon.

Over the years there’s been plenty for Dutch fans to cheer with national hero Richard Krajicek serving his way to the title in 1994 and 1997 and Sjeng Schalken winning twice in the early noughties.
