The ATP Vina Del Mar Open was put back on the ATP World Tour schedule for 2012, having been run as the ATP Santiago Open between 2010-2011. The ATP Vina Del Mar Open is currently also known as the Movistar Open. The relocation of the event is nothing new to the tournament organisers. The tournament was originally held in Santiago between 1993-2000, and then moved to Vina Del Mar between 2001-2009.

The city of Vina Del Mar is Chile’s central tourist hub, famous for its white-sand beach resorts. It is often referred to as ‘The Garden City’. Landmarks include the floral clock near the the Caleta Abarca beach, and the Valparaiso Sporting Club horse racing track. There are also historical attractions. Despite the effects of a number of earthquakes, many of the buildings built in Vina Del Mar in the nineteenth century still stand.

The ATP Vina Del Mar Open is the first clay-court tournament of the ATP season, and the first competition in the four-event ‘Golden Swing’, named after Olympic gold medal winners Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu. It is part of the ATP World Tour 250 Series. There is a men’s singles and a men’s doubles draw held every year.

The event started life in 1993 as the three ATP tournaments held in Brazil were suspended. The ATP were keen to keep these tournaments in South America, and a competition was established in Santiago to fill one of the gaps. The competition has taken place every year since 1993 with the exception of 1999,  due to a rescheduling decision made by the ATP.

The ATP Vina Del Mar Open has welcomed numerous highly regarded entrants over the years. It’s former entrants list includes Gonzalez, Massu, Mats Wilander, Jim Courier, Guillermo Coria, Marcelo Rios, Carlos Moya, David Ferrer, Gustavo Kuerten and Gaston Gaudio. Gonzalez, Coria, Kuerten and Gaudio have all managed to win the men’s singles title in this event. Kuerten, Gaudio, Ferrer and Wilander have clinched doubles titles.

The ‘Golden Swing’ often provides an intriguing series of events following the conclusion of the Australian Open. It can be used as early preparation for the French Open, the second Slam on the calendar.
