The Brasil Open, also known as the ATP Sao Paulo Open, was relocated to Sao Paulo from Costa do Sauipe for the start of the 2012 season. The event had previously been held annually in Costa do Sauipe since 2001. The ATP Sao Paulo Open is recognised as an ATP World Tour 250 Series competition. It is the most important tournament in Brazilian tennis, and marks the second week of the ‘Golden Swing’.

Sao Paulo generally experiences high level of rainfall during February, and this event will be staged indoors in accordance with this. The Complexo Desportivo Constancio Vaz Guimaraes will provide the setting for the ATP Sao Paulo Open for the foreseeable future. 

The ATP Sao Paulo Open started out as a hard court competition, though the surface for the event was changed to clay in 2004. A total prize pot of over 550,000 US dollars is on offer for participants. Similar prize money is offered in Rotterdam and San Jose, in events that run simultaneously. However, those events are played on hard courts. Those who favour clay court tennis tend to head to South America for this week.

In its short history, the ATP Sao Paulo Open has had some notable winners. Rafael Nadal won the tournament in 2005. There have also been some highly regarded two-time champions, namely Gustavo Kuerten and Nicolas Almagro. Other famous players to have lifted the winners trophy include Juan Carlos Ferrero, Nicolas Massu and Tommy Robredo.

The men’s doubles draw has also been the site of some fierce competition over the years. There has been a reasonable amount of success for the home nation in this draw. Daniel Melo teamed up with Enzo Artoni of Argentina to win the inaugural doubles competition in 2001. Since then, Daniel’s younger brother, Marcel, has teamed up with Andre Sa in 2008 and Bruno Soares in 2011 to form two all-Brazilian title winning teams.

The Brasil Open was formerly a WTA event as well. It only ran for four years, but can still count Monica Seles as one of its past winners. It began in 1999, and finished in 2002, as the men’s event celebrated only its second year of existence.

Sao Paulo should provide an ideal backdrop for the Brasil Open, and the competition promises to go from strength to strength in its new location. Fans can expect to see several of the world’s most talented clay court experts take part here, as the ‘Golden Swing’ continues its march across South America.
