The ATP Munich Open is one of three ATP World Tour events that bring April to a close, and the first stop in Germany of the ATP season. Also referred to as the BMW Open for sponsorship reasons, the ATP Munich Open is one of the ATP World Tour 250 Series events, offering a sum total of almost 400,000 Euros in prize money.

Munich is one of the largest cities in Germany, and one of the most popular with tourists. Later in the year, Munich hosts the annual Oktoberfest, which is one of the reasons that people from all over the world flock to the city. Munich is an attractive city in many respects, and this helps the ATP Munich Open to draw a field of high quality entrants year after year.

The ATP Munich Open’s history traces back to 1900, which was the year of the inaugural event. The event was held at the Munchner Tennis und Turnierclub Iphitos, which was the first tennis club to be established in Munich. The club featured grass courts, so the first competition was played on lawn rather than the clay that is now used for this tournament.

The Munchner Tennis und Turnierclub is still used for the event, and the courts have long since been redeveloped. The centre court has been present since 1930, and has a maximum capacity of 5,600.

The ATP Munich Open has hosted many tennis stars and boasts an impressive winners list. Roger Federer, Michael Stich, Ivan Lendl, Guillermo Vilas, Manuel Santana and Roy Emerson are all former ATP Munich Open singles champions. There have also been some notable runner-ups such as Thomas Muster, Petr Korda and Andre Agassi.

Philipp Kohlschreiber is the most recent German winner of the competition, having topped the field in 2007. Florian Mayer came within a set of changing this in 2011, but he eventually lost out to Nikolay Davydenko of Russia. Overall, the home nation has enjoyed a reasonable amount of success in Munich, providing the competition with plenty of finalists and winners. 

The ATP Munich Open is an entertaining clay court event, which should continue to provide tennis fans with plenty of action for years to come. It might not always enjoy much of a top twenty presence, but competition here is fierce. With the French Open on the horizon, the BMW Open also gives us a hint of what to expect from certain players at Roland Garros.
