The ATP Marseille Open takes place in mid-February, and keeps up the action in European tennis whilst some players head to Memphis for the ATP World Tour 500 Series event, and others remain in South America for the ‘Golden Swing’. The ATP Marseille Open, otherwise referred to as the Open 13, is classified as a 250 series competition, but still pulls in a high quality field of entrants every season. Over 500,000 Euros are offered at this event as prize money.

Matches take place on the indoor hard courts of the Palais des Sports de Marseille. The centre court of this venue can seat up to 5,800 spectators. Like the vast majority of indoor hard courts, the playing surface at the ATP Marseille Open is relatively pacy, which can spark some frenzied and exciting rallies.

The inaugural ATP Marseille Open took place in 1993. Marc Rosset defeated Jan Siemerink in the final of the men’s singles, whilst the French pairing of Arnaud Boetsch and Olivier Delaitre defied Ivan Lendl and Christo van Rensburg in the final of the doubles draw. Lendl is just one of many remarkable competitors to have attended the Open 13.

Three-time champions Rosset and Thomas Enqvist top the list for most titles won at the ATP Marseille Open. They are surrounded by several big names on the list of winners, such as Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Boris Becker. French fans in particular will be aware that a number of French tennis heroes prevailed in the singles draw. Guy Forget, Fabrice Santoro, Arnaud Clement, Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Michael Llodra complete the list of French winners prior to 2011.

Eight all-French teams have won the men’s doubles in total. Other notable partnerships to have won the doubles trophy include Thomas Enqvist and Magnus Larsson, and Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor. The achievements of Martin Damm are also worthy of mention. The Czech has won the doubles title on three occasions at the ATP Marseille Open. He achieved these successes by teaming up with Radek Stepanek in 2005 and 2006, and Pavel Vizner in 2008.

The ATP Marseille Open tends to be a thrilling event that frequently hosts some of the biggest names in men’s tennis. Under the watchful eye of Tournament Director Jean-Francois Caujolle, the Open 13 should continue to be a successful tournament on the ATP World Tour calendar.
