The ATP Doha Open is one of three season opening events on the ATP World Tour calendar. It is an ATP World Tour 250 Series level event, which typically hosts a number of top ten players each year. The event currently takes place on the outdoor hard courts of the Khalifa International Tennis Complex. It features a men’s singles and a men’s doubles competition.

Doha is the commercial and financial heartbeat of Qatar. It will be a key destination for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It goes without saying that the city is the focus of huge development. Doha is an intriguing city that should continue to attract the world’s best for years to come. There is currently a prize pot of just over a million US dollars at the ATP Doha Open, which is another major draw for potential entrants.

The tournament began life in 1993, with Boris Becker clinching a dramatic victory over Goran Ivanisevic in the inaugural final. Becker would be just the first of many tennis heroes to win a title here. Former champions include Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Andy Murray and Roger Federer. Edberg and Murray are two-time Doha champions, whilst Federer, a three time champ, tops the achievements list.

Rafael Nadal was a runner-up in 2010, having been beaten by Nikolay Davydenko in a seesaw three set battle. He’s not the only major talent to have been denied at the final hurdle in Doha. Andy Roddick, Gael Monfils and Tim Henman also feature in the runner-ups list.

Nadal is a three-time winner in the men’s doubles draw though, having partnered Albert Costa in 2005, and Marc Lopez in 2009 and 2011. A number of notable pairings have lifted the title here, such as Becker and Patrick Kuhnen, Edberg and Magnus Larsson, Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi, and the Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Doha will be known by many the scene of one of the most memorable snapshots in recent tennis history. Many tennis fans will associate the ATP Doha Open with the photographs of Federer and Nadal kickstarting the 2011 season by playing a few practice shots on a floating court in Doha Bay in front of the dramatic Doha skyline.
