The ATP Buenos Aires Open is one of three events that take place in the middle of February, along with the ATP Memphis Open and the ATP Marseille Open. Despite the competition from other tournaments, the ATP Buenos Aires Open is capable of attracting big name players on a yearly basis. Known alternatively as the Copa Claro, the ATP Buenos Aires Open is the third tournament of the South American ‘Golden Swing’. As such, it is a significant event for clay court experts.

The ATP Buenos Aires Open is classified as an ATP World Tour 250 Series event, and carries an overall prize pot in the regions of 475,000 US dollars. Matches take place on the outdoor clay courts of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, referred to by many as the ‘Cathedral of Argentinian tennis’.

The event has been through several reincarnations, and in previous forms the ATP Buenos Aires Open hosted some of the most talented players of all time. Roy Emerson, Ivan Lendl, Carlos Moya and Guillermo Vilas are all past champions in Buenos Aires. Rod Laver, Ilie Nastase and Bjorn Borg make up part of the list of runner-ups.

In its most recent format, the ATP Buenos Aires Open continues to be dominated by Argentinean players. There have been only two finals played between 2001-2011 (the tournament’s most recent run) that haven’t involved at least one player from the home nation. Guillermo Coria, Gaston Gaudio, Juan Monaco and David Nalbandian have all managed to pull through and win the title. 

Surprisingly though, Spain tops the charts for the most champions here, with Carlos Moya (two titles), Tommy Robredo, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Nicolas Almagro winning the singles draw. The recent list of champions is rounded off with 2001 winner, Gustavo Kuerten, and 2002 champ, Nicolas Massu.

Similar trends are found in the recent history of the men’s doubles competitions. Just like the singles, nine of the eleven doubles finals have involved at least one Argentinean contestant. This is a huge event for Argentinean professional tennis players, so it is largely unsurprising that so many of them rise to the occasion almost every season.

As the third event of the ‘Golden Swing’, the ATP Buenos Aires Open is closely followed by fans of clay court tennis. Many of the game’s best are attracted to this tournament, especially those who wish to focus their season around the French Open. Competition is fierce, and there is usually an abundance of exciting contests to keep an eye on when this event gets underway.
