In the only quarter-final of Open GDF Suez 2012 WTA tennis tournament with no seeded players involved, Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer takes on Mona Barthel of Germany.
Wickmayer began the tournament with an easy victory over the lucky loser Jill Craybas in the opening round. Craybas retired from the match after losing the first set. Then in the second round, she overcame Christina McHale 6-2, 7-5 to get to the quarters.
Barthel has come into the tournament with some form going for her. First she won the Hobart International by defeating Wickmayer in the final before she went on to enter the third round of the Australian Open where she lost to the eventual champion Victoria Azarenka.
Here in the Open GDF Suez 2012 at Paris, the 43rd ranked player went through three rounds of qualifying to get to the main draw before winning two more matches to enter the quarter-finals. In the first round, she defeated eighth seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues before crushing the wild-card Pauline Parmentier in the second.
The two have played each other twice and both have won one match each. In 2010, they met in the semi-final at the Torhout Challenger where Wickmayer won 6-3, 7-6, before Barthel had her revenge in the final of the Hobart International this year. She dropped only three games as she romped to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The Mona Barthel v Yanina Wickmayer quarter-final match at the Open GDF Suez 2012 will be played on Friday, February 10.
