The Washington Open will return in 2013 for another week of high quality entertainment. The event, which was one of the first open professional tournaments to be held in the United States, has continually been the site of innovation. Blue courts were debuted here, as were instant replay and video boards. The Washington Open was also the first tournament to start its main draw on a Sunday.
The WTA’s involvement here only began in 2011. Following the success of the tournament held in College Park, the WTA and ATP combined for a joint event in 2012. This competition was won by Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova.
Rybarikova emerged from out of the blue to win the title. Having been written off as an outsider at the start of the week the Slovakian thrashed all of her opponents in straight sets on her way to the title. She saved her best performance for the final, in which she defeated top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-1.
