It looks like we’re set for an enjoyable semi-finals day today at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford
The Bank of the West Classic is always an exciting tournament, and this year’s event hasn’t fallen short of expectations. There are two big semi-finals to look forward to today, one of which will involve world No. 4 Serena Williams as she continues her march towards a successful title defence.
The first semi-final of the day will feature Yanina Wickmayer and Coco Vandeweghe. Wickmayer enjoys playing on hard courts, and is alway dangerous when the ball is moving at pace. She’ll enter this clash as the favourite. Vandeweghe, on the other hand, has been something of a surprise package here. As the world No. 120 she’s caused a stir by getting this far. Her underdog story is given extra weight by the fact that she entered the main draw as a lucky loser.
The second semi-final will see Williams in action against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea. Cirstea has a big serve, and is known to be a tough opponent on hard courts. She recorded a superb three set win against Dominika Cibulkova on Friday, despite having lost the first set. Whilst Cirstea is a tricky opponent, Williams will be the comfortable favourite today, having bagelled Chanelle Scheepers in her most recent competitive set.
