Watch WTA Stanford live streaming for free online from Thursday as Serena Williams looks to defend the title she won last year.
Many of Serena's fans have expressed surprise that the American is in action this week, just days after winning her fifth singles title at Wimbledon and the women's doubles with sister Serena.
But while Serena admits she's a little tired after an intense fortnight of tennis and a long transatlantic flight, she had no intention of withdrawing from the Stanford field.
"This is the place that spurred me on last year," she said. "I had a great summer, and that propelled me with getting a lot of confidence and so that really helped, I definitely wanted to come back and try to redo that, but maybe do 19 straight (wins) this time. My goal is to do well here first, and then go from there. I have the Olympics, gosh, I keep forgetting about that, so gotta do [well there], and then I have the US Open, so it's a busy summer and it's halfway through, but it's going so fast."
Starting in Stanford, Serena won 18 straight matches last summer before losing to Aussie Sam Stosur in the US Open final. And with her confidence high after claiming her 14th Grand Slam title at the weekend, the American has her sights set on more glory over the next couple of months.
An Olympic gold medal in singles is one of the few prizes in tennis which has eluded Serena over the years and after her performances at Wimbledon, few would bet against her adding it to her collection.
