With defending champion Serena Williams not confirmed to take part in the Rogers Cup this year, Maria Sharapova will be the top seed and tournament favourite. The Russian has enjoyed a brief stint at world No. 1 this season, and joined a select circle of greats by completing a Career Grand Slam at the French Open.
Sharapova may have achieved some incredible feats this year, but that doesn’t mean that she’s expected to cruise in Montreal. Victoria Azarenka, who defied her in the Australian Open final, will be in action in this event and appears to be Sharapova’s biggest threat. Besides the Belarusian, Sharapova can rely on Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova, Sam Stosur and Caroline Wozniacki to make things difficult.
Sharapova’s focus will currently be on an Olympic showdown with Kim Clijsters, but in a few days she’ll start thinking about her title charge here. She should have every chance of winning another big title, but it will take a big effort to deny the rest of the field.
