The Texas Tennis Open got underway today with the qualifying rounds, which will set us up for next week’s main draw. Defending champ Sabine Lisicki won’t be in attendance this season having sustained an abdominal injury, but the field here contains a number of the WTA’s very best players.
World No. 7 Angelique Kerber is the star player in the entries list, though she can expect to have to deal with strong competition. Former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic is here and searching for form. Italy’s Roberta Vinci will also be here. She had a great season in 2011 but hasn’t quite hit the same heights this year.
There are a number of other players who could be in contention too. These include Peng Shuai, Klara Zakopalova, Monica Niculescu, Chanelle Scheepers, Sorana Cirstea and Yaroslava Shvedova.
