The WTA Barcelona Open will be the WTA's first European red clay event in 2013. The tournament, a WTA mainstay since 2007, is likely to be attended by a very strong field including a decent number of top fifty players.
This tournament began life as an ITF event in 2003, but quickly picked up in popularity and was upgraded to WTA International tier status. The change in status led to a relocation for the WTA Barcelona Open as it was moved from Club Tennis De La Salut to Vall d'Hebron, the same venue where the Olympic competition was held in 1992.
Roberta Vinci has been very successful in this tournament, winning twice and finishing as the runner-up once. In 2012 there was another Italian champ in the form of Sara
Errani, who defeated Dominika Cibulkova in the final. Errani went on to finish as the runner-up at the French Open and she qualified for the end of season WTA Championships.
