From Monday 9 February, the first BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games in the beautiful Belgian city of Antwerp promises to be a new jewel in the crown of the WTA Tour and the biggest event of the European indoors season.
WTA Antwerp will be the first Premier event of the WTA Tour season held in Europe and takes place in early February, a time when top players are turning their attention from the outdoor hard courts of the Australian summer to the long run-up to the major events at Indian Wells and Miami. Many countries host indoor and outdoor hard-court events during February and March but the BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games promises to shine among the best when its first edition is played in 2015.
Antwerp was formerly home to another WTA Tour event, known as the Proximus Diamond Games and played at the Sportpaleis Merksem. Built around the phenomenal success of Belgium’s great players Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, both women thrilled the home fans by capturing the title – Henin winning the first and last editions of the tournament, rated a Tier II throughout its 1999-2008 lifespan, and Clijsters triumphing in 2004.

The tournament’s champions also included seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams (2002, 2003) and three titles for two-time Grand Slam champion Amelie Mauresmo, who won WTA Antwerp in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Daniela Hantuchova, Ana Ivanovic, Dinara Safina, Vera Zvonareva and Li Na were among the players who starred in the 'Diamond City'.
Revived in 2015 after a seven-year absence with a new name, 2004 champion and Belgian sweetheart Kim Clijsters returns to the new WTA Antwerp tournament in a new role, as its tournament director.
The BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games offers $71,000 in prize money as well as a special, traditional prize – a gold tennis racquet studded with diamonds and worth $1.5 million, offered to any player who wins the tournament twice in three years. Mauresmo was the only player to claim this prize in the tournament’s first incarnation.
Replacing Paris’s Open GDF Suez in the calendar, it will be interesting to see which top players choose to star at WTA Antwerp in 2015 but the tournament is sure to attract a high-quality field looking to win the first BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games and give themselves the chance to get their hands on that diamond-studded gold racquet when WTA Antwerp begins on Monday 9 February.
