Victoria Azarenka struggled in her opening match at the BNP Paribas Open this year, beating Mona Barthel in an extremely close three setter. After winning that clash in a tie-breaker, the Belarusian made light work of her next two opponents. After beating Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-1, she set up a quarter-final clash against Agnieszka Radwanska.
Radwanska is also playing incredibly well this season, and like Azarenka, she’s now won 20 matches this season. Her fourth round success over a spirited Jamie Hampton maybe wasn’t as comfortable as it could have been, but the Pole will be pleased to have progressed with a 6-3, 4-6, 3-0 retirement victory.
“I saw she was cramping when she fell down. It's always tough to have that, and it's even tougher to come back and play after that,” remarked the world No. 5 after reaching the last eight. “It was too bad, because she has had some really good matches here and was playing some really good tennis. I was really in trouble in the second set today.”
“Jamie hits the ball very well, she's very consistent, has a good serve and moves very well too. She was playing well today until the cramps.”
Radwanska has only lost three matches this year, but all of these losses have come against Azarenka. Even so, she isn’t planning on altering her pre-match preparations for this meeting. “I'm not going to do anything special tonight, just some treatment then a massage, and just get ready for the next one,” said Radwanska. “I've played Azarenka many times, and three times this year. I pretty much know how she's going to play. She's playing very well and I'm really looking forward to it.”
Azarenka is taking a similar stance. “We always have really tough battles and I'm looking forward to playing her again,” stated the world No. 1. “Agnieszka's someone who always come up with something different. You can never really predict what she's going to do. All you can do is try to play your game and not really worry what she's going to do.”
