Top-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia takes on seventh seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the quarter-final of Pattaya Open WTA tennis tournament.
Zvonareva has had an easy set of two rounds, in which she came through in straight sets. First she defeated the local player, qualifier Varatchaya Wongteanchai 6-2, 7-5 to make it to the second round.
In the last-16 match, Zvonareva dropped three games in each of the sets before defeating Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova and getting to the quarters.
Cirstea’s path to the quarter-finals saw her ward off two Japanese players, Erika Sema and Misaki Doi in straight sets. She won 6-2, 6-2 in the first round against Sema before crushing Doi by the same scoreline to get to the last eight stage.
The two players have played each other once before in the Beijing Open in 2009 and the Russian was a runaway winner. She took the first round match 6-2, 6-2. This quarter-final match could be a lot tougher than that one at Beijing.
The Zvonareva v Cirstea quarter-final match at the Pattaya Open 2012 will be played on Friday, February 10.
