Urszula Radwanska made a flying start to this week’s Mercury Insurance Open by beating sixth seed Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 7-5. The Pole has shown vast improvements this season, and currently looks capable of continuing her run here in Carlsbad.
Radwanska’s second round opponent will be Melanie Oudin, who secured a shock success against her compatriot Sloane Stephens in her first main draw match. The world No. 121 had looked to be on her way out of the competition at several points, but somehow clinched a 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-0 success. Having entered as a lucky loser this week, Oudin will be dreaming of emulating Coco Vandeweghe’s exploits in Stanford.
This could be an intriguing contest. Whilst Radwanska is the in-form player at the moment, Oudin has shown glimpses of the form that took her as high as No. 31 in the world rankings in April 2010. The Pole should probably just about have the edge, but it’s clear that Oudin shouldn’t be written off.
